JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - For the third time this season, the JU women's soccer team fought to a scoreless draw, this time against Stetson on Wednesday afternoon at the Ashley Sports Complex. With the tie, both the Dolphins (4-8-5, 3-3-4 A-Sun) and the Hatters advance into the 2004 Atlantic Sun Championships, set to begin on Thursday, Nov. 4 in Buies Creek, N.C. The Dolphins will be the sixth seed in the tournament, while Stetson takes the fifth seed. JU has now qualified for postseason play for the sixth time in the eight years since joining the A-Sun.

While Stetson (5-5-5, 3-3-4 A-Sun) had the advantage in shots taken, 13-7, the Dolphins had two great looks at the goal get away from them. In the 58th minute, freshman forward Jess Newport (Forked River, N.J.) shot a ball from the left side of the penalty box, but her angled shot veered right of the goal. At the beginning of the first overtime period, Newport served in a ball to the penalty box, where redshirt freshman forward Stephanie Elgie (London, Ontario) got control of it behind Hatter keeper April Eilering, but Elgie could not get a shot off as three Stetson defenders swarmed to the ball and cleared it.

Junior keeper Michelle Kmiotek (Tampa, Fla.) had four saves to tally her fourth shutout of the season, tying Kristen Kirsch for fifth on JU's single season shutout list.

"I'm really proud of the way we finished the season," said JU head coach Chris Kouns. "To fight for those ties to get us in the tournament showed the great character our girls have."

The sixth-seeded Dolphins will face the third seed, Florida Atlantic, on Thursday, Nov. 4 in the opening round of the A-Sun Championships, hosted by Campbell University.
