JACKSONVILLE, Fla.- - With a capacity crowd of 328 fans on hand to witness the first-ever night game at the Ashley Sports Complex, the Jacksonville women's soccer team defeated East Tennessee State, 2-1, in the Atlantic Sun conference opener on Friday night.
With the score knotted a zero in the second half, freshman Keri Zwikker fed her A-Sun leading eighth assist to freshman Michelle Lavine, who knocked her second goal of the season to give the Dolphins (3-4-2, 1-0 A-Sun) a 1-0 advantage.
The Buccaneers (3-5-1, 0-1 A-Sun) battled back and tied the game off a penalty kick from Erin Ashton at the 15-minute mark.
Three minutes later, sophomore Stephanie Elgie fought through three Buccaneer defenders to hammer in her third goal of the season and seal the victory for the Dolphins.
"I am very, very proud of the effort our team gave tonight," said head coach Chris Kouns. "We are down to 13 field players because of injury and everyone did a fantastic job."
The Dolphins return to action on Sunday at 1 p.m. against Kennesaw State at the Ashley Sports Complex.
