Women’s soccer slated to finish eighth in A-Sun Preseason Poll
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – With the 2008 season looming around the corner, the JU women’s soccer team was picked to finish eighth in the Atlantic Sun preseason coaches’ poll and senior forward Keri Zwikker was named to the preseason all-conference team.
Kennesaw State, the defending A-Sun regular and tournament champion, was picked to finish first for the third consecutive year with 121 points and all 11 first-place votes. Mercer was second with 100 points, while Florida Gulf Coast (97), East Tennessee State (86) and Belmont (72) rounded out the top five. Stetson, UNF, the Dolphins, Campbell, USC Upstate and Lipscomb made up the rest of the poll.
“We ended up in the polls where we finished last fall,” said first-year JU head coach Brian Copham. “Preseason polls are where people think you belong. We have to play and prove where we belong. The only poll that really matters to me is the one that comes out on Nov. 9th.”
Zwikker is on the A-Sun preseason list for the second consecutive after being named the conference’s inaugural preseason MVP in 2007. Last year, Zwikker posted a career-best 16 goals en route to earning her third first team all-conference accolades. She heads into the senior season with 40 career goals, which is 13 goals shy of Stine Kloster’s career mark of 53 in the Dolphin record book.
“We are proud of Keri and the recognition she has gotten,” Copham said. “She has worked hard and has been a fantastic player for the program thus far. I am looking forward to seeing her in action this fall.”
The Dolphins, who opened camp on Aug. 6, hosts Florida Southern for an exhibition on Friday at the Ashley Sports Complex. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
