Women’s soccer downs Florida Southern in exhibition action, 4-0
It didn’t take long for senior forward Keri Zwikker to shake off the summer rust as she scored three goals to lead the JU women’s soccer team to a 4-0 victory against Florida Southern in exhibition action on Friday night at the Ashley Sports Complex.

The Dolphins scored twice in the two of the three 30-mintute periods and held the Moccasins to only seven shots in the match.

“It’s good to come out and play someone other than ourselves,” said first-year JU head coach Brian Copham. “Florida Southern is a well-organized team and Coach Ben Strawbridge does a great job with them.

"We started out sloppy, but after the first few minutes, we settled down. We were able to play and do some things that we wanted to do. I thought our backs were very good, but we have some work to do in some other areas. As a whole for the first game, not a bad start at all.”

Zwikker opened the scoring with punch inside the left corner of the goal on an assist from a cross by sophomore Jelena Vrcelj. Emme Graham fed Zwikker again less than four minutes later as she dumped in the left corner to give the Dolphins a 2-0 advantage.

In the second frame, Zwikker shared the wealth when she and Liz Fink combined on an assist to Vrcelj who scored on the breakaway for the Dolphins. Zwikker would again score in the second period to finish her scoring for the day.

JU goalkeepers Reba Stott and Lorna Brownlie combined for three saves in the match, while freshman Alexa Rooney saw significant time as well. The Dolphins’ backline was solid for the match, holding the Mocs to only two shots in each of the final two frames.

The Mocs’ goalies recorded 10 saves during the exhibition, while Linda Hoglund paced their offense with three shots.

The Dolphins will have one more week on practice before hosting College of Charleston for the 2008 season opener on Friday, Aug. 22 at the Ashley Sports Complex. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
