Women’s soccer opens 2008 season against College of Charleston
The JU women’s soccer team is set for the 2008 season opener on Friday night at 7 p.m. against College of Charleston, but it will not be at the friendly confines of the Ashley Sports Complex.
Due to the effects of Tropical Storm Fay, officials from both schools chose to move the game from Jacksonville to Charleston, S.C. to avoid any cancellations.
“Either way, we are excited to be playing,” said JU head coach Brian Copham. “We are thankful that College of Charleston was able to work it out for us to play at their place. Now the uncertainty of Friday night is taken care of and I am happy that we are getting to play a quality team and get the season started.”
The Dolphins head into the Charleston after downing Florida Southern, 4-0, in their exhibition match of the season on. Aug. 15. Senior Keri Zwikker scored three goals, while Jelena Vrcelj added the other goal in the victory.
Zwikker , an Atlantic Sun preseason all-conference selection, will begin her run at the record books on Friday, needing only 14 goals to pass Stine Kloster as the top goal scorer in school history.
The Cougars head into the 2008 season 19 players returning from last season that helped post nine wins and advance to the semifinals of the SoCon Tournament.
