Women’s soccer downs Mississippi Valley State, 2-0
The JU women’s soccer team scored two second-half goals to down Mississippi Valley State, 2-0, on Friday night to open the Crimson Tide Classic in Tuscaloosa , Ala.
The Dolphins (2-4-1) break a three-game losing streak after outshooting their opponent, 25-to-6, for the second straight match. The Devilettes (0-5-0) were led by goalie Kristin Swanson, who made 12 stops between the posts.
“It was nice win tonight,” said JU head coach Brian Copham. “We come out flat in the first half, but picked it up in the second half. We also have to find a way to punch the ball in the goal if we are going to be around the net that often. Overall, we have to continue to stay focused and carry this play into the next match because we are playing a good UT-Chattanooga squad on Sunday.”
Less than two minutes into the second half, senior midfielder Heidi Dettmer scored her first goal of the season off of a rebound to give the Dolphins a 1-0 lead.
Senior forward Keri Zwikker recorded her third goal of the year and 43rd for her career after scoring on a one touch pass from freshman defender Sissel Ravn in the 62nd minute to put the match out of reach for the Dolphins.
The Devilettes recorded all six of their shots in the second frame, but freshman goalie Alexa Rooney (2-4-1) made four saves to earn her second career shut out for JU.
The Dolphins finish the tournament on Sunday at noon (CT) against Tennessee-Chattanooga.
