Women’s soccer downs Campbell, 3-0
Sophomore forward Jelena Vrcelj scored two first-half goals to lift the JU women’s soccer team past Campbell, 3-0, on Thursday night in Atlantic Sun Conference action at the Ashley Sports Complex.

Sophomore defender Sian Senior also added a goal to help the Dolphins (7-7-1, 4-3) put the game out of reach, while freshman Alexa Rooney and sophomore Lorna Brownlie combined for a shutout between the nets.

The Camels (3-7-3, 2-4-1) committed a match-high 17 fouls and were limited to only four shots by the JU defense.

“This was another tough conference match,” said JU head coach Brian Copham. “I was happy to see us come out and start strong. We also played with good intensity, which helped us get a good win. Hopefully, we can roll this momentum into the matches next week.”

Vrcelj put the Dolphins in the lead less than seven minutes into the match with a goal in the left corner of the net on a cross from senior forward Keri Zwikker, who has recorded an assist in the last three matches.

Less than five minutes later, Vrcelj took a pass from freshman forward Jessica Hurtado and shot it past sophomore goalie Boomie Luck to give JU a 2-0 advantage.

Senior scored her first goal of the season in the second half by knocking in a loose ball following a corner kick.

The backline of seniors Lauren Haynes and Kirby Hutton along with sophomore Devon Dowell and Senior suffocated the Camels’ offense by holding them to one shot in the second half.

Rooney and Brownlie each recorded a save, while Luck tallied five stops for the Camels in the loss. The Dolphins return to action on Friday, Oct. 24, as they head to face Lipscomb in Nashville, Tenn. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
