Freshman Alexa Rooney named Atlantic Sun Defensive “Player of the Week”
Freshman goalie Alexa Rooney was named Atlantic Sun Defensive “Player of the Week” on Monday after recording her conference-leading seventh shutout of the season against UNF on Oct. 30 at the Ashley Sports Complex.

Rooney made six stops between the posts to help JU down UNF, 1-0, in the home finale and earn a point for the Dolphins in the annual SunTrust River City Rumble standings.

Rooney also becomes the third JU player to earn player of the week honors after senior forward Keri Zwikker (Sept. 22) and freshman forward Jessica Hurtado (Sept. 2) received offensive accolades earlier this season.

“I am proud of Alexa for earning this honor,” said JU head coach Brian Copham. “For a freshman to step into a derby like this and keep a clean sheet is a great accomplishment. She is playing well and I hope she continues it into the conference tournament.”

Rooney has tallied four shutout wins in the last five matches, including three in a row from Oct. 12-24. Her seven shutouts are currently second on the JU single-season lists as well as in the top 10 of the A-Sun single-season records.

She has also posted 89 saves, which is good for fourth on the Dolphin single-season list and fifth in the career rankings.

For their recent success, the Dolphins earned the No. 4 seed for the A-Sun Tournament and will host No. 5 East Tennessee State on Wednesday in Kennesaw, Ga. Kick is set for 4 p.m.
