Jessica Hurtado named to Atlantic Sun All-Tournament team
Freshman forward Jessica Hurtado was named to the Atlantic Sun All-Tournament team after helping the JU women’s soccer team reach the conference semifinals for the fourth time in the last five seasons on Nov. 6.

The Butler, N.J. native took the honor by scoring the deciding goal for the Dolphins to advance past East Tennessee State in penalty kicks, 5-4, during the first match of the A-Sun Tournament on Nov. 5.

“It is a great honor for Jess,” said JU head coach Brian Copham, who completed his first season with the program. “She has done a great job for us this year. She worked hard coming back from injury and has earned this recognition from our conference peers.”

In her first season with the Dolphins, Hurtado tied for second on the team with five assists and third in goals (3) to earn second team all-conference and all-freshman honors. She had an assist in three straight wins for the Dolphins (Oct. 12-24) and scored the match-winning goal in JU’s 1-0 win against cross-town rival UNF on Oct. 30 in the home finale.

She also posted two goals and two assists in her first collegiate week of matches to earn A-Sun Offensive “Player of the Week” on Sept. 2.

Overall, the Dolphins finished the 2008 campaign with the sixth highest win total (9-9-2) in school history and reached the A-Sun semifinals for the fourth time in the last five seasons. They also won four of their last five regular-season matches, which is the Dolphins’ best streak since the 1998 season.
