Women's soccer gearing up for regular season
The JU women’s soccer team is almost one week into its preseason training and just over one week away from its first regular season match.

The Dolphins won’t go into next Friday’s match against Furman unprepared, however, as they will travel to SCAD tomorrow at 5 p.m. in their only exhibition of the year.

“We’re excited to have the chance to play someone other than ourselves tomorrow,” said JU head coach Brian Copham. “We’ve had a good first week of practice and our team is starting to settle in and getting used to playing with each other again.”

JU is looking to improve on its run to the A-Sun semifinals last season and the Dolphins find themselves with their most talented squad in Copham’s three years, returning 10-of-11 starters for the fall. The only spot to fill for the Dolphins is on a backline that logged a JU record 547 minutes without allowing a goal last year, all during conference play.

Among the starting 10 that will return for JU are “A-Sun Freshman of the Year” Eva Leeper and all-freshman honoree Lisa Hensley, who combined for 10 goals and seven assists last season for the Dolphins up front.

“It’s nice to have so many players returning because they are all used to each other by now,” said Copham. “However, even though they started last year, they know that the freshmen are fighting for their spots.”

The Dolphins will begin the season with five straight road games and won’t see a match at the friendly confines of the Ashley Sports Complex until Sept. 5 for a non-conference tilt against Winthrop.
