After a win in its opening weekend against Furman, the JU women’s soccer team will head back to the Palmetto State for two matches this weekend against The Citadel and Charleston Southern.

The Dolphins (1-1) will face The Citadel at 4 p.m. on Friday afternoon in The Citadel/Nike Invitational before making the short trip across town to play Charleston Southern at 1 p.m. on Sunday in a regular non-conference match.

“We opened well last weekend with a good win against Furman where we showed great composure coming down the stretch and found some things to work on against Clemson,” said JU head coach Brian Copham. “We’ll be looking for more of the same this weekend against two quality teams as we keep preparing for the start of conference play.”

Last weekend, JU opened the season splitting its weekend in South Carolina against Furman and Clemson. A 3-2 win in double overtime over Furman gave the Dolphins their first season-opening win since 2007. Against Clemson, the green and gold scored first but conceded the next three goals, in a 3-1 loss.

Redshirt junior midfielder Liz Fink currently leads the team in goals and points (2, 4) with junior midfielder Jessica Hurtado close behind with a goal and an assist. Four Dolphins have currently recorded points, with senior defender Devon Dowell scoring a goal against Furman and freshman forward Courtney Conrad picking up an assist in the game. Goalie Alexa Rooney made 18 saves over the weekend.

Friday afternoon’s game against The Citadel will serve as the season opener for the hosts. The Bulldogs fell to Winthrop, 2-1, in an exhibition match with their lone goal being scored by midfielder Jillian Meyer. The Dolphins will open up their home schedule this year against Winthrop on Sept. 5.

The Buccaneers (1-1) are coming off a 3-2 loss against cross-town rival College of Charleston on Monday. Goals for Charleston Southern came from Marky Boyce and Allison Lewis. Live stats for the game will be available at http://csusports.athleticsite.net/livestats/SOC/xlive.htm.
