Women’s soccer opens weekend with win over Belmont, 2-0
Two goals secured the third win in-a-row for the JU women’s soccer team as it downed Belmont, 2-0, on Friday night at the Whitten Soccer Complex.

The Dolphins (9-4-2, 5-1-1 A-Sun) used goals from sophomore midfielder Emily Culbreth and freshman forward Courtney Conrad to lift the visitors. Junior goalie Alexa Rooney recorded her sixth shutout of the season, making three saves.

“It was a great win tonight,” said JU head coach Brian Copham. “The perseverance was great and we stayed within our game plan to come away with the win. It was a phenomenal defensive effort with some great saves from Lex at the end of the match.”

The Dolphins outshot the Bruins, 7-3, in the first half but neither team was able to break the scoreless tie. Redshirt-junior midfielder Liz Fink and sophomore forward Lisa Hensley led JU in shots during the first frame (3,2 respectively).

It was JU that would strike first in the second half as Culbreth scored her third goal of the season in the 50th minute. A ball from junior midfielder Jessica Hurtado played Culbreth in to beat a defender for a finish off the far post.

Conrad doubled the Dolphins’ lead in the 76th minute on a finish off a well-delivered free kick from redshirt-junior Liz Fink. JU finished the night outshooting Belmont, 15-8, with a 7-2 advantage on goal. Fink took five shots, three on goal, and Hurtado closed with three.

The Dolphins will close out their weekend with a 1 p.m. game at Lipscomb.
