Dolphins bid to repeat starts today

After winning a share of the Atlantic Sun regular season championship last year, the Jacksonville University women’s soccer team’s attempt to repeat as champions begins today as fall practice is kicked off.

The Dolphins finished atop the regular season standings last fall in a three way tie with Florida Gulf Coast and East Tennessee State.  If they want to defend as champions this season, they will have to do so replacing a group of seniors that included a pair of A-Sun All-Conference starters in Liz Fink and Jessica Hurtado.  Overall, 17 players return from last season while there are 12 new additions.

“I’m excited to see how all of the new players mesh with the returning team,” said head coach Brian Copham.  “With such large numbers, the competition will be fierce and the girls will really push each other to be best they can be.”

The first practice of the day was at 8:30 a.m. and focused on fitness and conditioning.  From what could be seen, the girls did not relax too much over the summer as they worked hard and stayed in shape.

“I am proud of the way the team has reported to camp,” said Copham.  “It is very evident that the girls have worked hard over the summer and trained at a very high level.”

Day one of practice concludes with another session this afternoon at 3:30 p.m.  The Dolphins will keep some form of a two-a-day schedule for the next couple of weeks leading up to their first games of the season.
