Dolphins stay perfect in conference play

They needed two periods of extra time, but the Jacksonville University women’s soccer team prevailed 2-1 over the Lipscomb Bisons Sunday afternoon in Nashville.

Sophomore and 2011 leading goal scorer Kaitlyn Bassett scored the game winner in just her second game back from injury.

The Dolphins (5-4-1, 2-0-0 A-Sun) took the lead in the first half when the Weckhurst sisters combined for a goal.  Raquel, a junior forward, fed her freshman sister Marie a perfect ball into the box that she shot passed the keeper and into the goal.  This was Marie’s second goal in as many games for the Dolphins.

The Bisons were able to tie the game however with a controversial play minutes into the second half.  Lipscomb’s Baylee Linnell hit a long looping ball towards JU goal keeper Jill D’Amico.  The ball caromed off of the crossbar and it appeared D’Amico prevented it from crossing the goal line but the linesman ruled otherwise.

The game would remain tied through the end of regulation and the first overtime period.

A minute and half into the second overtime period, JU was able to draw a corner kick setting the stage for the dramatic game winning goal.  Raquel Weckhurst served a perfect ball into the box that Bassett was able to find with her head and direct into the back of the net.

"I was pleased with how we were able to play today," said head coach Brian Copham.  "We had some very good sequences of play and I was proud of the character and perserverance to get the win.  Anytime you can go on the road and pick up two wins against two tough teams it is a great weekend."

With the win, JU remains undefeated in conference play and is back over .500 since the first game of the season.  The Dolphins will look to get their third A-Sun win on September 28 when they travel across town to take on UNF in a River City Rumble match.
