Dolphins tie FGCU for the fourth straight time

In a matchup of last season’s conference champions, the Jacksonville Dolphins and Florida Gulf Coast Eagles tied for the fourth straight year Sunday afternoon in Jacksonville.  Each team was able to score a goal in regulation but neither could find the game winner in overtime and finished in a 1-1 draw.

The Dolphins were able to strike first in the match and went up 1-0.  Senior Eva Leeper found herself in the right place at the right time as she alertly collected a rebounded shot in the box and poked the ball passed the Eagle goal keeper for her first score of the season.

After trailing 1-0 at the end of the first half, FGCU would even things up in the second period of play.  The Eagles Kayley Clay sent a looping pass into the box that Ally Kasun found and shot passed Dolphin keeper Jill D’Amico.

The game featured back and forth action with both teams constantly switching the field and making the opponent work.

“I am proud at how we fought on a hot Sunday afternoon the effort we put forth throughout the whole game and overtime,” said head coach Brian Copham.  “I was really pleased with our midfield play today.  They had a lot of work to do and a lot of ground to cover and did a great job on both sides of the ball.  This was two good teams battling back and forth that couldn’t break through and get win.”

Jacksonville enjoyed a 23-16 shot advantage including a 9-5 advantage in the first half when the Dolphins really kept the Eagles on their heels.

JU (6-4-3, 3-0-2 A-Sun) remains undefeated in conference play with the tie.  The team will embark on a two game road trip with they face Mercer and Kennesaw State on October 12th and 14th.
