Bassett Takes Home First A-Sun Player of the Week Award of 2013

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Junior forward Kaitlyn Bassett of the women’s soccer team already carried high expectations going into this season as the leading goal scorer in each of her first two years with the program. With two goals in the first two matches of 2013, she has lived up to her billing in the early going and was rewarded by being named the Atlantic Sun’s Player of the Week on Monday.

In Friday’s 6-0 victory over Flagler, Bassett headed in the winning goal in the third minute off a beautifully delivered corner kick from Jessica Cataldo-Ramirez. Though she never had to touch the ball on JU’s second goal, Bassett was at least partially responsible for keeping the Flagler defense so close to the goal line as Cataldo-Ramirez found Mary Sturgis on another Jacksonville corner. Set up deep and shooting from 25 yards out, Sturgis had all the time she needed to line up her shot as the Saints barely came off their line to challenge the freshman’s effort from distance, wary of Bassett lurking near the six-yard box.

On Sunday, Bassett continued to torture opposing defenses. Just seconds after Miami had taken a 2-0 lead in the 16th minute of the match, Sarah Moghadas and Bassett combined to slice the deficit back to a single goal. The two pushed forward immediately on the restart and picked their way through the middle of the Hurricane defense. Eventually the ball came to Bassett near the penalty spot and she rocketed a ball past the Miami keeper to make a 2-1 score line.

Bassett and the rest of the Dolphins return to the pitch on Friday, taking on Niagara at 4 p.m. from the Corbett Soccer Stadium on the campus of USF in Tampa.
