Women's tennis falls to Georgia Southern, 5-2
The JU women’s tennis team dropped its second straight match this afternoon in a 5-2 defeat at the hands of Georgia Southern at the Keith Watson Family Tennis Complex

The Dolphins (1-3) were led by senior Tatiana Soldatova and junior Eve Castaing who once again were victorious in both of their doubles and singles poinst but the Eagles (2-1) took hold of the match in the singles competitions. Both Soldatova and Castaing have posted a 4-2 record this season in singles and doubles competition.

“We fought hard today but we lost to a solid, well coached team,” said JU head coach Shane Wood. “Our biggest problem is still getting the doubles point. It’s tough because when you drop it, you’re playing catch-up for the rest of the match.”

The Dolphins’ No. 2 and 3 doubles teams of Fernanda Carrero/Iva Jaresova and Virignia Iwinski/Sara Londono each dropped their matches 8-3 with Soldatova/Castaing taking the No. 1 match 8-1.

JU looked to play catch-up in the singles portion of the contest but could only find success in the Nos. 1 and 2 spots. Soldatova easily handled Natalie Maffett (7-6, 6-1) while Castaing made quick work of Melanie Rolle (6-1, 6-1).

The Dolphins didn’t go down without a fight, taking two matches to three sets before ultimately falling in each of them.

Sophomore Iwinski took her first set 3-6 but couldn’t quite find the final ball in the last two sets, dropping the last two 7-5, 7-6. Sophomore Londono couldn’t finish Allison Beeler off after taking the first set and dropped the last two, 6-1, 6-4.

Tuesday’s competition for the Dolphins against Bethune-Cookman was cancelled due to weather.

A very windy afternoon greeted the Dolphins on Saturday against UCF and JU was unable to finish off a potentially great win, falling 4-3.

Opening with the doubles competition, JU took the Nos. 2 and 3 matches JU to take a 1-0 overall lead. Carerro/Jaresova took their match against Alexis Rodriguez and Jenna Doerfler, 9-7, sealing the first point while sophomores Spencer/Iwinski fell to Christy Core/Andrea Yacaman, 8-2.

JU moved onto the singles portion looking to keep the momentum from the doubles point going. Soldatova won the No. 1 match over Jenny Frisell as she had to retire in the second set due to an injury; Soldatova was leading the match at the time of the retirement. The No. 6 match between Katie Orletsky and Londono came up for the Dolphins after heading to a third-set super tiebreaker, 11-9.

UCF would find the victory in the middle of the lineup, however, as the Nos. 3, 4 and 5 players all won in straight sets.

The Dolphins will look to put an end to the two game losing streak when they face Embry Riddle at Daytona Beach, Fla. on Wednesday.
