Jacksonville Women Finish Fifth At Gator Cross Country Invitational

Gainesville, FL - Nearly 1300 participants were on hand Saturday for the 12th annual Gator Invitational Cross Country meet at the University of Florida Golf Course. In a six race meet which included four high school competitions, the highlights were the two collegiate competitions which kicked off the day at 8 a.m.

Both the Florida women and the men came away with important victories at the Invitational. The 23rd-ranked Gator women packed five runners within 25 seconds of each other in the top-10 to finish first in the 16-team field with a score of 26. The men put six finishers in the top-15 including three under the 26-minute mark to take the top place of 19 teams with a team score of 22. The Jacksonville women complete a strong showing in fifth place, as four Dolphin runners finished in the top 40 among collegiate women. Meanwhile, the Dolphins' men's team placed three runners in the top sixty to finish 12th among 19 schools.

South Florida alumni Maria Otto won the women's race with a time of 17:41.32, the third best time in the history of the race. Sonja Shedden of UCF was second in 17:52.21 followed by Sarah Howard of Georgia State in third at 17:59.20. Gator Senior Tamieka Grizzle (Bronx, N.Y.) led the women's team with a fourth place finish in 18:09.46.

The Jacksonville women were led by Adriana Campos in a time of 18:32.97, good for 8th overall and 7th among collegiate competitors. Campos was joined in the top forty by April Nudo (19:42.36-27th), Ayesha Muhammad (19:54.46-32nd) and Jennifer Takach (20:19.02-40).

In the men's competition, Rob Evans once again led the way for the Gators' men's team, setting his third personal best of the year in his third race. The junior from Altamonte Springs, Fla., broke the 25-minute barrier for the first time in his career, taking second overall (1st among collegians) in 24:50.49 behind UF alumnus Mike Mykytok who won his third career Invitational in a time of 24:47.29.

Jacksonville was led by Kevin Barry who finished 74th overall and 51st among collegiate competitors with a time of 29:22.13 for the 8,000 meter course. Rowan Irons (29:50.29) and Daniel Laverty (29:56.92) finished 59th and 60th respectively among collegians for the Dolphins.
