Track & field wraps first day of A-Sun Indoor Championship
Freshman Charlene Charles and junior Hillary Crook each won individual conference titles to help the JU track & field team take second place after the first day of competition at the Atlantic Sun Indoor Championships in Johnson City, Tenn.

Kennesaw State is the current leader with 68.5 points, while the Dolphins posted 62 points after Friday’s two sessions.

“We had a mixed bag of results today,” said JU head coach Ron Grigg. “On a positive note, we had championship performances from Stacey Young in the pentathlon and Hillary in the shot put, while getting wins from Charlene in the long jump and the distance medley relay team. We had a lot of mental mistakes today that in not what we have come to expect from a championship team. However, we have exceeded the numbers I predicted so we have set ourselves in a good position for tomorrow.”

Crook tossed a life-time best 46’10.25” to win the shot put title, while Charles took first in the long jump with a leap of 19’8”.

Charles and junior Lousie Kiernan each qualified for the 60-meter finals on Saturday after running personal-best times in the preliminaries. Kiernan ran a time of 7.59 to place first, while Charles was fourth with a time of 7.65.

Sophomore Susanne Klungtveit, junior Unique Singleton, sophomore Amalia Vogler and freshman Joane Pierre rounded out JU’s first place finishes in the late session by winning the distance medley relay with a time of 12:14.57.

Other top performers included junior Laura Phillips who placed fifth in the shot put with a lifetime best toss of 41’4.25”. Senior Tiffany Bromfield took sixth in the shot put (41’1”), while senior Elsabeth Goshu was seventh in the 3,000-meter with a time of 10:20.69.

Earlier in the day, Young with the pentathlon with a conference record 3,490 points. Charles took third with 3,431 points, while Bromfield was fourth (3,368 points). Sophomore Alana Walker rounded out the group with 2,976 points for seventh.
