Women's Cross Country shows promise in 2007 opener
Aug. 31, 2007
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -
After heavy thunderstorms left standing water over most of the one mile course, North Florida emerged victorious in both the men's and women's cross country races, Friday evening at the JU Short Course Duals.
The JU women's team took second at the meet behind top three finishes by freshman Anastasia Fokina and sophomore Alyssa Deal. Fokina announced her arrival to JU by assuming the lead after the mile mark over UNF's Amanda Davey. Davey fought back to overtake Fokina in the final 100 meters for a one second victory.
Deal finished third while YaTandrea Burke of Florida A&M and Hillary Adams of UNF rounded out the top five. Sophomore Ali Ritter (ninth), sophomore Tiffanie Saxton (10th) and junior Janel Grooms (11th) also placed well for the Dolphins.
"Coach (Karl) Byrne was very pleased with what he saw today," said JU head coach Ron Grigg. "We have only had two team practices, so this result gives us a clear idea of how to proceed with the training plan for the season. North Florida's pack running was too strong for us today so we will work hard to reverse our fortunes at the Atlantic Sun Championship."
Due to an equipment malfunction, times for the women's race are incomplete and unofficial, however, all places and team scores are accurate and official. UNF finished first as a team after going 4-0 in the dual scoring, follwed by JU (3-1), Stetson (2-2), FAMU (1-3) and Savannah State (0-4).
On the men's side, Sammy Palmer of North Florida won the men's race with a time of 16:40. Charlie Allen was JU's top finisher after placing 22nd in the field. UNF finished first as a team by going 4-0 in dual scores followed by FAMU (3-1), Stetson (2-2), Savannah State (1-3) and JU (0-4).
