Track & field adds LaTonya Payne to the 2011-12 class
The JU track & field team’s roster continued to get deeper as the squad added transfer LaTonya Payne (Mabbleton, Ga.) for the 2011-12 season.
Payne, who spent her first two seasons at Fort Valley State, has personal-best times of 56.38 in the 400-meter and 2:12.59 in the 800-meter. She tallied a season-best time of 59.90 in the 400-meter hurdles on May 14 at the Alicia Coleman Invitational, which currently ranks as the seven-best mark in the NCAA II entering this weekend’s national championships.
“What I like most about LaTonya is her burning desire to be better,” said JU head coach Ron Grigg. “She has run cross country and on the track and she has run everything from the 4 x 100m relay to the 1500 meters. This is her first year running the 400 hurdles and I think that will be her best event. Her versatility will be an asset to us in our distance medley relay and 4 x 400 relay as well.”
Payne is the fifth athlete to join the Dolphins next season alongside Sally Marie Futch (Statesboro, Ga., throws), Sarah Bailey (Vernon, British Columbia, distance), Shadaey Campbell (Orlando, Fla., sprints) and Alexis Taylor (Sanford, Fla., hurdles) who committed to JU earlier this semester.
The current Dolphins will kick off the NCAA East Preliminary Round on Thursday in Bloomington, Ind.
