Track & field signee finishes fourth at European Junior Championships
JU track & field signee Petra Munkacsy is already making a splash before she gets to the First Coast after finishing fourth in the 100-meter hurdles at the 21st European Athletics Junior Championships in Tallinn, Estonia.
Munkacsy, who was representing her home country of Hungary, ran a personal best time of 13.78 into a -1.0 meters per second head wind to get a top-five finish. Her previous best in the event was a time of 13.85.
“Petra has had an excellent season,” said JU head coach Ron Grigg. “After her indoor success, she and her coaches felt she could run in the 13.7 range this outdoor season. She had a personal best of 13.82 in the first round and again with 13.78 in the finals. Both were run into a head wind. We are excited for her to bring those talents to our campus this fall.”
Prior to committing to JU, Munkacsy became the Hungarian National Champion this year in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.56.
Munkacsy is one of eight newcomers for JU in 2012, joining Sally Marie Futch (Statesboro, Ga., throws), Sarah Bailey (Vernon, British Columbia, distance), Shadaey Campbell (Orlando, Fla., sprints), Alexis Taylor (Sanford, Fla., hurdles), LaToya Payne (Mabbleton, Ga., sprints/hurdles), Courtney Walker (Jacksonville, Fla., sprinter) and Shanique Walker (San Jose, Calif., hurdles/jumps).
