Track & field adds Samantha Turner for the 2013 season

The JU track & field team has started to add to its roster for the 2013 season, signing Samantha Turner (San Antonio, Texas) to the throws group.

Turner, a senior at John Paul Stevens High School, is ranked 16th nationally in the shot put. As a junior, she was the first female thrower in school history to advance to state after winning the regional title in the shot put. Turner has set the school mark for the shot put and discus for three straight seasons.

Her personal bests are 43’7.75 in the shot and 137’7 in the discus. She enters the 2012 indoor season ranked second in the state with a shot put toss of 42’6”.

“Samantha is a key addition to our throws group,” JU assistant track & field coach Bambi Carson said. “She will make an immediate impact in the conference. She is an exceptional student, not only in the classroom, but also of the throwing events.”

Off the track, Turner is stellar in the classroom earning National Junior Honor Society and the National Society of High School Scholars accolades. She has also received the Falcon Award for carrying a 4.0 grade-point average all four years.

The Dolphins are back in action on Feb. 17 for the Atlantic Sun Indoor Track & Field Championships in Johnson City, Tenn.
