Strong performances by juniors Charlene Charles and Bienna Freeman at the Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup on Feb. 4 helped the duo sweep the A-Sun Athlete of the Week honors.

Charles earned the field conference weekly honor by breaking her current pentathlon record with 3,971 points (1st). She took first in the 60-meter hurdles (8.88), high jump (5’7.25”), long jump (19’2.5”) and 800-meter (2:19.74) for a point’s total that leads the conference and ranks 10th nationally.

“Charlene overcame a subpar hurdle race to produce really nice performances for the remainder of the competition,” JU head coach Ron Grigg said. “Her score will put her in contention to be a national qualifier. She has overcome a lot of frustrations to come this far and we are proud of her determined effort.”

Freeman earned her second career track conference weekly accolade by winning the 800-meter with a school-record time of 2:09.35. Her time leads the conference as well and is 34th nationally.

“Bienna continues to improve with each race she runs,” Grigg said. “We haven’t found the limits to her talents yet. She ran a smart first 600 meters and had a monster final 200 meters which has been her trademark.”

The Dolphins return to action on Feb. 18 when they compete at the A-Sun Indoor Track & Field Championships in Johnson City, Tenn.
