The JU track & field team will look to build on a strong start to the outdoor season Saturday at the UCF Black & Gold Challenge in Orlando, Fla.

The Dolphins compete for the first time in two weeks since beginning the season at the UNF Spring Break Open on March 3.

“We’ve really been having great training results in all event areas since the indoor championships,” JU head coach Ron Grigg said. “We should begin to see the fruits of that labor soon. It is still very early, and we are still doing some experimenting, but it will be good to put the uniform on and see what kind of results we can produce.”

Junior Akeela Bravo and freshman Courtney Walker each led the Dolphins at the UNF Spring Break Open to earn A-Sun Athlete of the Week honors.

Bravo got field honors after producing A-Sun leading markings in the hammer (170’8”), discus (143’2”, 4th) and the shot put (44’0.5”, 4th) to win the field athlete honors. The hammer and shot put were also personal bests.

Walker continues to get better for the Dolphins after winning the 200-meter in 23.81. She also joined fellow freshmen Petra Munkacsy, Shanique Walker and Shadaey Campbell in the 4x100-meter relay that had a first-place time of 46.32.

Junior Joane Pierre broke the school record in the 5,000-meter in 17:10.19 (3rd), while junior Charlene Charles had a personal best time of 2:14.35 in the 800-meter.

Senior Laura Phillips (165’6”, 4th) and junior Sara Schunter (139’7”, 14th) also had personal-best tosses for the Dolphins in the hammer throw.
