Women's Cross Country Finish Sixth at A-Sun Cross Country Championships

ATLANTA, Ga. - Tamsin Anstey's 22nd place finish, Chelsea Knight's 24th place and season-best times from five JU runners propelled the women's cross-country team to a sixth place finish (162 points) at the 2001 Atlantic Sun Cross Country Championships hosted by Georgia State, Saturday in Atlanta. The Dolphin men's squad finished in 11th with 328 points. The A-Sun race marked the final race of the season for the Dolphin squads.

The JU women's team finished the 5-K race with an average finishing time of 19:47.69, the best average of the year for the team. Anstey finished the championship course in a season-best 19:09.48, the fastest time for a Dolphins this season. Chelsea Knight crossed in 19:14.36, which was also her best time of the season.

Other JU scorers to record their fastest times of the season were Alexis Wieroniey (33rd, 19:45.75), Patti Jenkins (41st, 20:14.28) and Laura Winn (45th, 20:34.54). Jennifer Takach (20:36.58) finished in 46th.

The Dolphin men finished the 8-K race in 11th place. Rowan Irons time of 30:25.17 (66th) led the pack of Dolphins across the finish line as JU runners took the 66th through 69th place finishes. Irons was followed Jeremy Berven (67th, 30:26.85), Tony Strother (68th, 30:37.14), and Scott Cook (69th, 30:42.66). Other Dolphin runners to score were James Calandro (33:40.58) and Brian Boone (33:50.23), who finished in 73rd and 74th respectively. Will Beaton finished in 77th place, with a time of 36:06.19.

Host team Georgia State took the A-Sun title in the men's race with 35 after crossing three of the top five finishers and averaging a finishing time of 25:39.80. Belmont won the women's crown, with 32 points and an average time of 18:14.85, as they crossed five of the top 10 runners.

Heather Lee of Campbell won the first individual championship of the year, finishing the course in 17:00.03. Belmont's William Kemey captured the individual title in the men's race.
