Jan. 6, 2003

LANDOVER, Md. - Jacksonville University junior Safiya Davy (Mitchellville, Md.) set a new school record in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.51 for a second-place finish at the Terrapin/PVA Indoor Invitational on Saturday at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex. Davy, who finished as the first collegiate competitor, also set a new personal best as she finished seven hundredths of a second behind Kia Davis, who was running unattached.

"I am not surprised to see Safiya run this fast this early," said JU head track coach Ron Grigg. "Her fall training has been wonderful and this bodes well for both her indoor and outdoor seasons."

Davy finished second in the preliminaries with a time of 8.59 to qualify for the finals. Freshman Lakisha Brooks (Upper Marlboro, Md.) failed to qualify in the 60-meter dash, finishing 21st in the preliminaries with a time of 8.13, while freshman Keiona Frenche (Riverdale, Md.) finished 17th in the finals of the 400-meters with a time of 1:02.26.

The Dolphins return to action at the Florida Indoor Intercollegiate on Saturday, Jan. 18 in Gainesville.
