April 3, 2003

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jacksonville University senior sprinter Monique Tubbs (Boston, Mass.) has been named the Atlantic Sun Conference Track Athlete of the Week, as announced by the league office. Tubbs set a new school record in the 100-meter dash last Friday at the Coca-Cola Florida Relays in Gainesville with a time of 11.37.

Tubbs' time in the 100-meter is the fastest time in the A-Sun this season and sixth-fastest in the country. She also finished third in the 200-meter and achieved an NCAA Regional qualifying mark in the process with a time of 23.61, which also is a top time in the conference.

Tubbs, along with Andrea Pressley (Upper Marlboro, Md.), Safiya Davy (Mitchellville, Md.) and Tiffany Wright (Lauderdale Lakes, Fla.), nearly set another school record in the 4x100-meter relay, falling one-hundredths of a second shy, with a time of 45.17 to finish fourth and hold the top time in the league.

Tubbs recently became just the second athlete in JU history to earn All-American honors four times and the first female athlete to do so, after she finished third in the 60-meter dash at the NCAA Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., last month.

Tubbs and the JU track team return to action at the Texas Relays on Friday and Saturday, while the remaining members compete at the South Florida Invitational in Tampa on Saturday.
