Women's Cross Country Wins JU Duals Over Georgia Southern and Savannah State
Oct. 2, 2004
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville University women's cross country team won the JU Dual meets over Savannah State and Georgia Southern Friday afternoon on the old golf course on the JU campus. The men's team lost its head-to-head match-up against Savannah State. Georgia Southern's Brittney Swick won the women's individual crown with her time of 20:40. Robert Herbert of Savannah State completed the course in 17:48 to get the win on the men's side.
"The course has become extremely challenging for runners," director of cross country Ron Grigg said. "The land has become very soft since it's been set aside as a wetlands reclamation area, which led to uneven footing for the athletes throughout the races."
Freshman Fallon Heffernan (Neptune Beach, Fla.) led the Dolphin women with her time of 20:58 on the 5K course. Junior Lindsay Moffenbier (McDonough, Ga.) finished third (21:12), while sophomore Stacey Ollar (Jacksonville/Mandarin) ranked fourth (21:34). Senior Christina Bensi (Troy, N.Y.) ran a 21:36 to finish fifth, with juniors Rachel Garvin (Denton, Texas) and Jennifer Tyler (Jupiter, Fla.) ranking sixth (22:13) and seventh (22:39), respectively. Freshman Danielle Coyle (New Port Richey, Fla.) finished ninth (23:19), with junior Keiona Frenche (Riverdale, Md.) ranking 10th with a time of 24:31.
JU's men were led by freshman Jeff Wolf (Ft. Myers, Fla.), who finished second with a time of 18:23. Freshman Jared Baehr (Springfield, Mo.) ranked fifth (19:49), with fellow freshman Trebor DeVerter (Cayuga, Ind.) following him a second later in sixth. Sophomore Jason Coates (Jacksonville) finished eighth (20:59), with junior John Hoffman (Orange Park, Fla.) ranking ninth (21:14).
The Dolphins travel next to DeLand, Fla., for the Stetson Hatter Invitational on Oct. 15.
