Track & Field finishes with strong showing at UCF Invitational

March 4, 2006

ORLANDO, Fla. - Final Results for UCF Invitational

Sophomore Janel Grooms breaks the school record in the 400-meter hurdles to finish first and help the Jacksonville track and field team complete a strong showing in the first outdoor meet on the season at the UCF Invitational in Orlando, Fla. on Saturday afternoon.

"It was nice to start the outdoor season off with some wins," said JU head coach Ron Grigg. "The wind conditions, sometimes blowing over five meters per second, meant that the times would not be stellar, but Janel's school record was a nice performance. Each week we look to get a little better with the conference championships just being six weeks away."

Grooms tallied a 1:01.07 to earn the top spot in the 400-meter hurdles. Grooms is one of five Dolphins to finish in first place, while no one placed below the top-15 in any event.

Senior Lindsey Moffenbier took first place in the 5000-meter run, while freshman Simone Clark grabbed the top spot in the 100-meter hurdles. Clark also picked up a seventh place finish in the 400-meter hurdles.

Sophomore Fallon Heffernan raced her way into first place during the 200-meter steeplechase and a ninth place mark in the 800-meter run. Junior Lindsay George finished first in the javelin throw.

Other top Dolphin performers were junior Ashley Williams, who placed second in the 400-meter dash. Senior Keiona Frenche took third in the 800-meter run, while junior Janita Ocana placed fourth in the 200-meter dash. Senior Tissili Rogers tallied a seventh placed mark in the 100-meter dash. Freshman Shunisha McClinton finished seventh in the shot put and eighth place in the hammer throw. Freshman Natasha Harvey took seventh place in the javelin.

The Dolphins runs again on Saturday March 11, at the USF Invitational in Tampa, Fla.
