Track and Field shows high marks at Hurricane Invitational

March 18, 2006

MIAMI, Fla. - Final Results for Miami Invitational

Freshman Janel Grooms won her third consecutive 400-meter hurdles event of the 2006 season, while sophomore Fallon Heffernan took first in the 3000-meter steeplechase to help the Jacksonville University track and field team put up high marks on Saturday afternoon at the Hurricane Invitational in Miami, Fla.

"Janel ran very fast today, but an unfortunate official's error will prevent her time from counting towards regionals," said JU head coach Ron Grigg. "Despite the mistake, I expect her to run faster in two weeks to make it a moot point. The long sprints and hurdles looked good today. Our 4 x 1 had a nice opening effort. But as a team, we have some work to do because other Atlantic Sun teams have improved since indoors."

Grooms posted her third straight 400-meter hurdles win of the season with a time of 1:00.17.

Heffernan earned her first 3000-meter steeplechase victory by tallying an 11:13.87.

The 4X100-meter relay team of Tissilli Rogers, Janita Ocana, Simone Clark and Natasha Harvey finished fourth in standings, but were second among collegians with a time of 46.05 for the Dolphins.

Other top Dolphin performers are Ocana, who took seventh in the long jump with a mark of 5.80m. Ashley Williams finished seventh in the 400-meter dash with a time of 56.12, while Harvey finished third in the 100-meter hurdles (14.30) and seventh in the 400-meter hurdles (1:03.16). The Dolphins also placed fifth in the 4X400-meter relay by tallying a 3:50.35.

The Dolphins travel to Tallahassee, Fla. to compete in the FSU relays starting on Wednesday.
