GAINESVILLE, Fla. - After breaking the school record in the preliminaries on Friday night, sophomore Janel Grooms finished eighth in the 400-meter hurdles to wrap up the NCAA East Regional on Saturday in Gainesville, Fla.

Grooms missed automatically qualifying for the NCAA Championships with a time of 59.04, but just making the finals and her preliminary time of 58.37 could help her punch a ticket to Sacramento, Calif. for the national meet.

Her preliminary time ranks in the top 20 nationally, which can get her at-large invite to the meet. Grooms will declare on Sunday and look for an invitation to advance to the meet on either Monday or Tuesday.

"Janel struggled a little late in the final today," said JU head coach Ron Grigg. "However, what she did on Friday will give her a strong chance of getting an invitation to the NCAA Championships. We will wait and see what happens."

On Friday night, sophomore Natasha Harvey earned her second straight trip to the NCAA Championships to represent JU in the long jump after taking third with a leap of 21 feet (6.40m).

The NCAA Championships will take place in Sacramento, Calif. beginning on June 6.
