In just her second collegiate outdoor track championships, sophomore Natasha Harvey finished fourth in the long jump preliminaries to earn a spot in the finals on Wednesday afternoon at the first day of the NCAA Championships in Sacramento, Calif.

Harvey fouled on her first two jumps, but proved the third one was a charm with her best leap of 21'3.5 (6.49m) to take her flight and finish fourth overall to secure a place in Thursday's final.

UCLA's Rhonda Watkins (21'5.5", 6.54m), Cornell's Jeomi Maduka (21'4.75" 6.52m) and Ole Miss's Brittney Reese (21'4" 6.52m) made up the top three spots.

"Tasha had a lot of trouble in her first two attempts, but was to put things together in her final jump to earn a place for tomorrow's final," said JU head coach Ron Grigg. "Tomorrow, everyone will have a clean slate and hopefully she will duplicate what she did in her last jump today so she can be successful in the finals."

Harvey is one of 12 jumpers who qualified for Thursday's final. The field will get three jumps and the top nine will come back for three more jumps to determine the national champion.

The long jump final is set for 9:15 EST on Thursday and fans can follow all the live action Also competing on Thursday is sophomore Janel Grooms, who will run in the 400-meter hurdles preliminaries starting at 10:30 EST.
